The Introduction of Water: Safe Hydration Milestones

For the first six months of life, a baby's digestive tract and kidneys are optimized exclusively for breastmilk and formula. Introducing plain water too early can actually be dangerous, as it can dilute an infant's essential electrolyte levels. However, a major milestone occurs as they approach half a year of age.

Introducing water at six months is less about hydration and more about practice. At this stage, your baby is learning how to coordinate a cup — whether an open cup or a straw cup — and practicing the complex mechanics of swallowing a thin liquid. Offering a tiny bit of water alongside solid foods also helps wash down purees or soft finger foods and prevents minor constipation as their gut learns to process solid fiber. Keep the volume strictly within the recommended 2 to 4 ounces per day to ensure they don't fill their tiny stomach with water, which could displace the nutrient-dense breastmilk or formula they still fundamentally need.
