Understanding Stool Changes: The White/Chalky Stool Alert

Diaper duty provides an unexpected, daily window into your baby's internal health. While infant stool comes in a vast rainbow of normal colors — ranging from mustard yellow and orange to bright green and light brown — there are a few specific colors that serve as immediate medical red flags.

The normal brown and yellow colors of stool are direct results of bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. As bile travels through the intestines, it breaks down fats and alters the color of the waste. If a baby's stool appears white, clay-colored, or pale grey, it indicates that little to no bile is reaching the digestive tract. This absence can point to a serious congenital condition such as biliary atresia, where the bile ducts are blocked or damaged. Early diagnosis and medical intervention are absolutely vital for liver health in these cases. If you ever log a white or chalky stool, take a clear photo of the diaper under good lighting and contact your pediatrician immediately so they can evaluate it.
