Newborn Fevers: An Absolute Emergency Requiring Immediate Action
1 min read

When it comes to infant health, a spike in body temperature requires an entirely different level of urgency depending on the baby's age. A fever in a baby under 12 weeks needs an immediate pediatrician call or an immediate trip to the emergency room.
The reason medical professionals treat newborn fevers with such high urgency stems from the anatomy of an infant's immune system. In the first three months of life, a baby's immune defenses are highly immature. They do not have the robust capability to easily localize infections to one part of the body. What might look like a simple viral bug can rapidly cross into the bloodstream or the central nervous system, escalating into a severe systemic infection like sepsis or meningitis. Furthermore, young infants do not always display the typical, obvious signs of severe illness that older children do; a high temperature might be the only early warning sign available. When checking a young infant's temperature, a digital rectal reading remains the medical gold standard for accuracy. If the thermometer reads a high temperature, do not administer fever-reducing medications like acetaminophen before speaking to a doctor, as doing so can mask symptoms and delay an accurate diagnosis. Gather your diaper bag and seek professional medical care immediately.
