The Witching Hour: Demystifying Evening Cluster Feeding

If your little one suddenly demands the breast or bottle incessantly between the hours of 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM, you aren't doing anything wrong — you are experiencing cluster feeding. While it can be incredibly taxing at the end of a long day, there is a distinct biological purpose behind the madness: babies naturally "tank up" on calories right before bed, meaning you should fully expect frequent, shorter feeds during these hours.

Cluster feeding often coincides with a baby's natural circadian rhythm adjustments and a late-day rise in cortisol (the stress hormone), which can cause general fussiness. By feeding frequently in small bursts, your baby is ensuring their stomach is completely full to sustain them through their longest stretch of nighttime sleep. It also acts as a comfort mechanism to soothe an overstimulated nervous system at the end of the day. To manage this phase, shift your expectations. Instead of fighting the frequent demands, plan your evenings around them. Set yourself up on the couch with dinner, a drink, and your favorite show, and allow your baby to nurse or take small bottles comfortably. Understanding that this is a healthy, sleep-inducing strategy can take the anxiety out of your evenings.
