Time for a Bigger Bottle? Recognizing Signs of Increased Appetite

As babies grow, their stomach capacity expands, allowing them to take in larger volumes of milk at a single feeding. However, knowing exactly when to increase their bottle size can sometimes involve guesswork.

Babies are excellent regulators of their own appetite. If they are consistently emptying their bottles down to the very last drop and tracking at their maximum volume, they are likely finishing their meals still feeling slightly unsatisfied. Other subtle signs that it's time to upgrade include your baby crying or fussing immediately after finishing a bottle, sucking aggressively on the nipple even when the fluid is gone, or suddenly waking up earlier from naps or nighttime sleep due to hunger. When upgrading, try adding just 0.5 to 1 ounce of extra formula or breastmilk to their usual amount. If they drink it comfortably without increased spitting up, you have successfully graduated to a new feeding baseline.
